What does a charity insurance policy include?

Protecting your organisation's legal liability for accidental bodily injury to volunteers and members of the public using your facilities or attending your events or activities. 

Professional Indemnity

If your organisation is found responsible for delivering inadequate advice or services that result in financial loss or confidentiality breach, charity professional indemnity insurance will offer protection if it is found liable for any compensation. It will also cover legal costs incurred whilst defending a claim.

Directors and Officers

Directors, officers, administrators, committee members, and managers of all charities regardless of size have a responsibility in respect of their roles and actions. Cover is provided for claims against them whilst acting in good faith for actual or alleged breach of duty, neglect, errors, or omissions.

Charities typically require insurance that protects them against any loss, damage, or liability that can arise such as building insurance, contents insurance, and cover for events and fundraising.

Charities are required to take out insurance against their third-party liabilities which can include public liability, professional indemnity, and employers liability if you have staff working for your charity.  Cover will also be required for your directors and/or officers who are responsible for the governance of your organisation.

At each renewal, an approximate number of volunteers working with your charity is provided to your insurer and the policy will cover those volunteers

This policy has been designed to cover common types of fundraising events that are regularly undertaken by charities.  An annual declaration of events and fundraisers is made at each renewal and additional fundraisers, subject to approval by your insurer, can be added to your policy cover throughout the year.

Directors and Officers Liability insurance is designed to protect the committee members, trustees, directors, governors,  and officers of the charity or not-for-profit organisation. This insurance will provide protection if they are accused of any wrongdoing, such as a breach of fiduciary or statutory duty or governance negligence.

If your charity of provides a service, such as giving advice or guidance, this insurance will offer protection in the event that someone working for your charity provides incorrect information to a service user or beneficiary, who then sues you for negligence or providing inadequate advice.

Cyber insurance generally covers your charities liability resulting from large-scale breaches, business interruption, ransomware, and other types of cyberattacks. It can help your organisation to recover losses and associated costs such as legal fees, incident preparation and response support, forensics services, and other costs associated with a cyber incident.
